Catherine has been inspiring members at Steve Nash Fitness World Victoria since the club opened in 1987. A rhythmic and creative person with a passion for music, Catherine puts her all into creating HIIT-inspired choreography for her Group Fitness classes with upbeat, funky music to suit every fitness level. Her specialty is high intensity interval training (HIIT)-based Group Fitness classes such as Cardio Chaos & The Works, but also enjoys instructing step classes and stretch-based classes such as Crushh.
Catherine was selected by her peers as the Group Fitness instructor of the month for her long-time commitment to SNFC, positive and dynamic teaching style, and genuine passion for engaging participants with creative, flowing movement patterns.
What inspired you to get into fitness and teaching?
Years ago, my first husband was a Group Fitness instructor. His high level of fitness was motivating to me, so I started working out on my own. Several of the ladies at the club I worked out at were Group Fitness instructors, which inspired me to get my Group Fitness certification. I was very involved in gymnastics as a young girl, so the rhythm, athleticism and sense of community I acquired through gymnastics transitioned really well to Group Fitness. I also loved attending Group Fitness classes myself, so it was a no-brainer!
What’s your favourite memory from teaching at SNFC?
I love seeing the familiar faces at my classes each week. In particular, there’s two gentlemen that are always front and centre at my Cardio Chaos class who always bring a ton of energy and enthusiasm to each class – they love to incorporate their own funky moves into the mix!
I also love working with the other Group Fitness instructors – they’re so supportive and always willing to lend a hand when needed. The club staff at Steve Nash Fitness World Victoria are also fantastic. It’s great to see a community of people working together and supporting one another towards their goals!
How has being a group fitness instructor benefitted your life?
Group Fitness has impacted my life in many ways. I think about some of the times in my life that I’ve relied on my fitness instruction to keep me motivated – if things aren’t going well, or I hit an obstacle, the one thing I’ve never wavered from is fitness. I like to think of Group Fitness as my faithful friend – it’s always there for me, it’s what I love to do, and I will do it no matter what!
What advice can you give to our members about leading a healthy and active lifestyle?
I think we all have a gift of health. Fitness is a really important thing for us to maintain, especially as we age. Our joints get stiff, we lose flexibility, and over time these things can be hard to get back. My advice is to keep at your healthy activities and fitness – find something you love and stick with it! If you’re able to maintain a good level of fitness at a younger age and keep up with it consistently, it will be a good friend to you your whole life.
